Build A Healthy Plate

This is a fun an easy way to create a healthy plate for you and your kids.  The USDA started a program called Choose My Plate and they provide simple tips to make eating healthy approachable and uncomplicated.
The theory is to fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean proteins which will provide all the nutrients you need and not too many calories.  Here are the rules to follow when building a healthy plate.
  1. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
  2. Make half your plate whole grains and lean protein
  3. Have skim or 1% milk
I recently discovered Pottery Barn Kids new Healthy Eating Collection which has plates and placemats that have kid-friendly pictures to guide you as you build your healthy plate.  I love them!
Other advice to follow is avoid foods high in solid fats, added sugar and salt.  Also choose drinks with little or no added sugars (Water!) and have fruit for dessert.  You can find more helpful healthy eating tips for you and your family at www.choosemyplate.gov.
